(CNN) — The death of Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan is not being treated as suspicious, London’s Metropolitan Police said Tuesday.

The Cranberries rose to global fame in the mid-1990s with a string of hits, including “Linger,” “Zombie” and “Dreams.” The group, from Limerick, has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide.

In 2007, O’Riordan launched a solo project with her album “Are You Listening?” before reuniting with the group in 2009. She also teamed up with Smiths bassist Andy Rourke and Ole Koretsky to provide the vocals for the group D.A.R.K.

Much like the O.J. Simpson double-murder trial that recently came back into the news, Brittany Murphy 's "accidental death" in December 2009 at age 32 is a Hollywood story that continues to confound.

In this age of snaps, tweets and instas, celeb news comes in and out of our feeds faster than a swipe right. So it speaks volumes when a Hollywood tragedy sticks in our ADD-addled minds more than six years after the fact. And in that sense, Murphy's death is among the stickiest, chiefly because many believe that far more questions than answers linger.

One outspoken skeptic is respected forensic pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht, who, after reviewing the Murphy case, tells E! News, "I had questions initially and those questions remain."

The lead singer of Irish rock band The Cranberries has died suddenly aged 46 in London. Dolores O'Riordan had been in the city for a recording session, according to her publicist. Her family are "devastated" by the news of her death and have asked for privacy.

CBC News journalist Thomas Daigle posted on Twitter: “Scotland Yard says Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan’s death Monday in London is not being treated as suspicious. The case has been handed over to the coroner’s office.”

O’Riordan, 46, was found dead in her room at the Hilton on London’s Park Lane at 9.05am (local time) on Monday. Police earlier said her death was being treated as “unexplained”.
